Benito Quinquela Martin - The Artist of La Boca
Benito Quinquela Martin was born in Buenos Aires (La Boca - the Port of Buenos Aires) in 1890 and was left at an Orphanage at 20 days of his birth. Adopted at the age of 6, he grew up in the district of La Boca. At 14, he began drawing although his adoptive father discouraged him. He entered school but had to leave at the age of 9 to help his stepfather in the coal business. At 15, he began delivering coal to the ships. By the time he was 17 he began studying drawing at a local school. His work depicted the port scenes. In his lifetime he explored all the art media including printmaking and ceramics. His most striking work involves "Heroic Worker" scenes both in oil on canvas and on printed works. He specialized in etching and aquatint. His first exhibit was in 1918 at the Witcomb Gallery in Buenos Aires to great reviews! in 1921 he exhibited in Rio de Janeiro and then Between 1923 and 1929 he exhibited in Madrid, Paris and all over the Continent including Italy. His philanthropic work in providing support to the arts and to children in La Boca are legendary. Founder of Cafe Tortoni in Buenos Aires where all the artists of the time formed a Salon. Today his work hangs at St. James Palace in London, among many other museums and private collections.

Eugene Schoen is Included in American Art Deco Furniture by Ric Emmett
Eugene Schoen (1880 - 1957) was one of American Art Deco's top design names. The following is an excerpt from Ric Emmett's new book, American Art Deco Furniture: " Eugene Schoen (1880-1957) was born in New York City. He attended Colum¬bia University, graduating in 1901 with a degree in architecture. The Paris Exposition of 1925 inspired him to open an interior decorating business specializing in the new modern movement. He designed furniture, rugs, and occasional items for his cli¬ents. His work was exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s two exhibits of industrial design. Schoen had a wealthy clientele and his combination of the best of New York, Paris, and Vienna with the quality of craftsmanship of his furniture, mostly executed by Schmieg, Hungate, and Kotzian, brought him ample commissions through the depression. He maintained his exclusivity by selling through other decorators or to his own clients."

MIAMI BEACH'S ART DECO WEEKEND with its "Down Argentine Way - Deco Vino Tango" theme was a great hit & lots of fun!!! There were guided tours of the Miami Beach Art Deco District and the Wolfsonian, Tango dancing and lessons and of course great food & some wonderful Argentine wines!
Gave me a chance to visit with some good friends such as Beth Dunlop of Home magazine and Jeff Gale of Oceanside antiques.

Can't BELIEVE it's 2009 already and much less that Tony Fusco and Robert Four are preparing for the AD 20 / 21 Show v.2009! Last year's show was a class act and the merchandise first class. This year, they have Vladimir Kagan as a "Special Guest" and recipient of the AD 20/21 Award. Ric's duck collection grew quite a lot in 2008. Soooo....he decided that he wanted to group them together for a family portrait. He's still working on the second "Gomo the Rubber Duck" book.

The Deco the Halls Show in San Francisco this weekend allowed us to visit with all our friends in the "circuit". It was great to see everyone and a lot of really nice and fun things were exhibited. ROCK THE BOAT SHOW ON BOARD MEGAYACHT "SEAFAIR" by: Iza November 29, 2008 A beautiful balmy Miami night and we are invited to the "Rock the Boat" affair on board the "Seafair". A "megayacht" docked in front of the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach....on Collins & 45th. The show is advertised as: "A Showcase of Jewelry, Art & Design Aboard Seafair, the World's First Megayacht Venue"....a small but very interesting show! Silver Fund is exhibiting their usually fine silver including a very cute Jaeger-LeCoultre Mystery Clock. Lots of jewelry: Cartier & Better! Lumari is showing some wonderful sequined creations....including a "New York" jacket which is shown in the next entry. Other exhibitors included Chaumet, Paris, Galerie Re, Marrakech, Graff Diamonds and Martin du Louvre who brought a stunning gold leaf bas-relief by Janniot titled "Eros". You can reach them at (561) 398 2523 for the duration of the show (until the 7th of December). It's fun to be in Miami most of the time but Art Basel brings a new dimension to "Our Town"...this show being a part of the festivities.
