Bronzes & Art Deco Metalware

Bush Terminal Railroad Brooklyn Sign

This very rare American enamel on metal sign might have been on one of the buildings or trains of the Bush Terminal Railroad which had about 20 miles of track within the Bush Terminal in Brooklyn and about 3 miles through Brooklyn to connect with the Pennsylvania Railroad. The terminal was named after Irving T. Bush who, in 1902, organized six warehouses and one pier on the waterfront of Brooklyn as a freight handling terminal for wholesalers in Manhattan to make handling their goods more economical. It linked with other railroads and shipping companies to transport goods. The Terminal and Railroad were commandeered in 1917 by the U.S. Navy during WWI and were returned to private ownership after the war. The center of the stylized design is a triangle within which is a geometric train riding on diminished perspective train rails bearing the letters “Founded 1903”. The triangle is enclosed in a circle with “Bush Terminal Railroad” within the circle. The colors of red, green and black are quite vivid for its age and the “Bush Terminal Railroad” letters have a golden cast to them. The entire design is quite advanced for its time period and reminiscent of later Art Deco designs. The sign is very heavy and the metal is 1/8” thick and it’s 27 ½” in diameter.
