Donald DeLue Painting

An American oil on canvas painting by Donald DeLue (1897 – 1988) titled “Mermaids of the Sea”, dated “1939” and signed on the lower right. DeLue was an important figural sculptor who worked in the WPA and received many awards and commissions in his lifetime. The painting, which is in his heroic style, features three nude damsels and one man. Stars and fish in gold stand out against a pastel background. The painting measures 36” x 40” and is presented in a black and silver frame. The painting is stylistically related to a drawing reproduced on page 34 of D. Roger Howlett’s book The Sculpture of Donald DeLue, Gods, Prophets and Heroes.
