Art Deco Sconces
Ile De France Sconces
The Ile de France, one of the most deco of all the French Transatlantic steamships had its maiden voyage in 1927. Its interior was gutted in 1941 for conversion as a troop ship. In 1947, after the war, it was redecorated and put into luxury service again. Thirty prestigious French decorating firms were assigned to the 1926 decoration of the ship's interior. Jules Leleu won the contract for the Salon de Lecture. When the ship was refitted in 1947 for its 1949 return to service, Leleu was again chosen to decorate, among other areas, the Salon de Lecture. These four sconces and the following ceiling light are from the Salon de Lecture on the Ile de France. The sconces are bronze with concave frosted glass panels and twisted clear glass rods. All are in excellent condition and have been rewired for American electricity. The sconces measure 33" high and are 7 ½" wide. They can be purchased as a set of four or as a pair.
