Original Deco Art
Jerry Roth American Art Deco Watercolor of a Depression Era Dandy
The young man in this watercolor may be a self portrait of Jerry Roth (1918 – 2008)…or possibly how he would like to have looked. Jerry, at sixteen, was the youngest artist in the WPA and he was the bread winner in the family. The gent in his tattersall and grey shirt has a cigar in his mouth, his wallet in his hand and an oversized bottle and glass on the table beside him. In the depression this would be Nirvana for a young artist. The watercolor is 17” x 11” and is singed in pencil “Rothstein”. Jerry Roth (1918 – 2008) was born Jerome Rothstein in the Bronx, New York. He acquired the middle name “Henry” at the age of four when he became dangerously ill with pneumonia. Jewish tradition contrived to fool the Angel of Death who would come to Earth with orders to take Jerome Rothstein. At a later date he became Jerry Roth.
