Benito Quinquela Martin - The Artist of La Boca
Benito Quinquela Martin was born in Buenos Aires (La Boca - the Port of Buenos Aires) in 1890 and was left at an Orphanage at 20 days of his birth. Adopted at the age of 6, he grew up in the district of La Boca. At 14, he began drawing although his adoptive father discouraged him. He entered school but had to leave at the age of 9 to help his stepfather in the coal business. At 15, he began delivering coal to the ships. By the time he was 17 he began studying drawing at a local school. His work depicted the port scenes. In his lifetime he explored all the art media including printmaking and ceramics. His most striking work involves "Heroic Worker" scenes both in oil on canvas and on printed works. He specialized in etching and aquatint. His first exhibit was in 1918 at the Witcomb Gallery in Buenos Aires to great reviews! in 1921 he exhibited in Rio de Janeiro and then Between 1923 and 1929 he exhibited in Madrid, Paris and all over the Continent including Italy. His philanthropic work in providing support to the arts and to children in La Boca are legendary. Founder of Cafe Tortoni in Buenos Aires where all the artists of the time formed a Salon. Today his work hangs at St. James Palace in London, among many other museums and private collections.

Eugene Schoen is Included in American Art Deco Furniture by Ric Emmett
Eugene Schoen (1880 - 1957) was one of American Art Deco's top design names. The following is an excerpt from Ric Emmett's new book, American Art Deco Furniture: " Eugene Schoen (1880-1957) was born in New York City. He attended Colum¬bia University, graduating in 1901 with a degree in architecture. The Paris Exposition of 1925 inspired him to open an interior decorating business specializing in the new modern movement. He designed furniture, rugs, and occasional items for his cli¬ents. His work was exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s two exhibits of industrial design. Schoen had a wealthy clientele and his combination of the best of New York, Paris, and Vienna with the quality of craftsmanship of his furniture, mostly executed by Schmieg, Hungate, and Kotzian, brought him ample commissions through the depression. He maintained his exclusivity by selling through other decorators or to his own clients."

World War I broke out and Weber was trapped in America. In the early 1920's, Weber became Art Director for Barker Brothers in Santa Barbara, California, designing several lines of modern furniture. In 1927 he left Barker Brothers (but remained as design consultant) and opened his own design studio in Los Angeles. Weber designed furniture for Higgins Mfg.Co., Meyers Co., Berkley and Gay, Haskelite Mfg., Karpen Furniture Co., Noha Furniture Co., Grand Rapids Furniture Co., and Lloyd Mfg. Co. American Art Deco Table Mirror Attributed to KEM Weber
This rare American Art Deco table mirror is attributed to KEM Weber (1889 - 1963). The mirror is from the Sommer and Kaufmann store in San Francisco which Weber helped to decorate. The cleverly designed mirror, four wood balls, two larger ones in front, a medium sized ball on a short rod in the back and a small one in the front center; the three front balls are cleaved to hold the mirror. The beveled mirror is original as is the wood. The mirror is 11" high, 11" wide and 6 1/4" deep.

Kem Weber American Art Deco Arm Chair for Mueller Furniture Co.
This American art deco arm chair was designed in 1936 by Karl Emmanuel Martin (KEM) Weber (1889 - 1963). In 1935 Weber could not find a manufacturer for his “Airline Chair”. The several hundred he sold to Disney Studios were made by local cabinet makers. In 1936 he sold the concept (A wood chair that had no screws nails or bolts and could be shipped “flat”) to the Mueller Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan who manufactured this chair. The chair is 33 1/2” high 31” deep and 22” wide. It is in excellent condition and bears the Mueller Furniture Company tag.

KEM Weber American Art Deco Streamline Triple Band Armchair
K.E.M. Weber (1889 – 1963) designed this streamline American art deco triple band armchair for the Lloyd Manufacturing Company. The chair features machine age triple band chrome arms enclosing a sprung leather seat and back. The chrome and leather are all in good original condition. This model was featured in Lloyd’s 1939 catalog. The chair measures 28 ½” wide x 42” deep and 32 ½” high.
Pair Kem Weber Springer Armchairs
This pair of supremely comfortable American art deco arm chairs was designed ca. 1935 for Lloyd Manufacturing by Karl Emmanuel Martin (KEM) Weber (1889 -1963). Known as the “Springer” chair, the chairs sit on flat band chrome steel springs and function as rocking chairs. The chairs have their original chrome, the original red vinyl cushions are sprung and in excellent condition. The black arms have been refinished in high gloss lacquer. Each chair measures 27” wide x 32” deep x 34” high.

This pair of stylish and comfortable streamline design armchairs was designed by Karl Emmanuel Martin (KEM) Weber (1889 -1963) in the 1930’s. Finished in high gloss black lacquer and pearly white leather, the chairs are the height of American Modern art deco. The “Stair-step” curved arms offer a contrast to the vertical lines of thelegs and back. Each chair measures 20 ½” wide x 22” deep and 33 ½” high.

Kem Weber American Art Deco Floor Lamp
This rare and important American art deco floor lamp was designed by KEM Weber (1889 – 1963). The circular chrome base has a chrome center. The inner portion of the base, the ball and the shaft of the lamp are enameled in Weber’s 1927 green paint. Above the base are three "tulips" graduated in size, chrome on the outside and copper in the inside. The upper portion of the shaft has three smaller "tulips" again graduated in size in chrome, copper and chrome order. The upper portion has a tall copper finial. A chrome bar supports a new mica shade. All metal parts have been cleaned to remove any dirt and corrosion. The true color of the green was taken from an area of unexposed paint under the chrome center of the base. The lamp has been rewired and is in excellent condition.
