Maurice Dufrene French Art Deco 1925 Paris Exposition Three Piece Desk Set
This one of a kind desk, bibliotheque and chair set was designed by Maurice Dufrene (1876 – 1955) for the “La Maitrise” stand for the French department store Les Galeries Lafayette at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes,.
Fully documented, this set represents an opportunity to own a piece of art deco history. The three pieces have been completely restored and are as exhibited in 1925.
Dufrene, who is one of the art deco period’s major designers and historians, studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and in 1904 became a founding member of the Societe des Artistes Decorateours with whom he exhibited throughout his career. In 1921 he became artistic director of “La Maitrise”..
This ensemble, called “Goncourt” is of oak and mahogany decorated with ebony and purple heart wood. The desk top and chair seat are in black leather and the center bookcase door is beveled glass.
The desk measures 55” x 29” x 29” high, the bookcase is 64” x 17” x 64” high. The chair is 29” high.
