Johnny Friedlaender Trojan Horse Etching

Johnny Friedlaender was a fabulous artist who worked during the height of the Modernist movement in Europe. This etching and aquatint is quite rare, only 100 exemplars were printed. This one is numbered on the lower left "53/100" and is signed "Friedlaender" in pencil on the lower right. Shows a Trojan horse patiently waiting underneath a blue moon. It is framed in UV Plexiglas and acid free materials. The frame is gold leaf. Plate Size 17" x 23" Overall: 26" x 31"

Rare 59 piece Mid Century Modern “Cube”istic Luncheon Set By Gonder Ceramic Art

This rare, complete, and unique fifty-nine piece luncheon set was designed ca. 1951 by Lawton Gonder for his company Gonder Pottery South Zanesville, Ohio. It is from a short lived line known as “La Gonda”. Gonder Pottery opened in 1941 in Zanesville, Ohio and closed in 1958. The service for eight which is based on cubes with rounded corners is in soft 50’s pastel colors of blue, pink, yellow and gray. Marked “This Piece Individually Handcrafted by Gonder”, the set contains two items of each color as follows: 8 Luncheon Plates, 8 Salad Plates, 8 Mugs, 8 Cups, 8 Saucers, 8 Fruit Bowls, One Coffee Pot, One Sugar & Creamer Set, One Salt & Pepper Set, A Serving Platter, A Serving Vegetable Bowl and Four Jelly Dishes.

Tapio Wirkkala Dessert or Salad Set Ultima Thule Line

This dessert set of a serving bowl and six individual bowls were designed in 1968 by Finish master Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) for Iitala and are from his Ultima Thule line. Inspired by melting ice, the hot glass is blown into wooden molds that give the glass a variety of patterns as the glass burns the wood. The serving bowl is 6 1/2" in diameter and 4 1/4" high. The six individual bowls are each 4 1/2" in diameter and 1 3/4" high.

Tapio Wirkkala Lemonade Set Ultima Thule

Ceiling Light and Matching Sconce by Stilnovo

This ceiling light and matching sconce were manufactured by the Italian company Stilnovo in the 1960’s. The body of each is brass with five glass discs descending. The lamp is 14” in diameter and drops 26” from the ceiling. The sconce is 15” wide, 9” deep and 10” tall. The ceiling light and sconce are in excellent condition and are wired for us electricity.

French Mid Century Design Brass and Crystal Floor Lamp

This very elegant French art deco floor lamp is from the 1940s. Highly polished brass and gleaming crystal make a statement for any home. The lamp sits on a tripod base with a central shaft flanked by three brass strips. Three "u" shaped arms emerge from a crystal and brass center to hold three lights. The lamp is 68" tall and is in excellent condition, rewired for U.S. electricity.

French Mid-Century Modern Design Armchair with Lambs Wool Seat

This large and comfortable French Mid-Century Modern Design arm chair offers a wonderful contrast between the black enameled metal body and the fluffy lamb’s wool seat. The oversized chair is 31” wide x 29” deep and 43” high and is in excellent condition.

Carborundum Print by Matta “L’Oeuf de Verbe”

This other worldly print is by Roberto Sebastian Matta Echaurren (Known as Matta) (1911 - 2002). Matta is known as Chile’s most famous painter and an internationally known Surrealist. This print, titled "L’Oeuf de Verbe", is Carborundum in colors, hand colored in pastel and gouache. The paper is 38" x 38" and is signed on the lower right with Matta’s cipher. It is numbered "22/125" on the lower left. Published by Nordstamp Fine Art in 1995, the piece is archively floated on black matting in a silver frame

French Aubusson Tapestry by Michele Van Hout LeBeau for Robert Four

This sparkling French Aubusson wool tapestry titled “Clair de Lune” was designed by Michele Van Hout LeBeau for Robert Four in an edition of 100 of which this is number 25. The tapestry, which measures 39” x 62 ½” , is signed on the reverse and has the artist’s cipher woven into the lower left. There are brass rings on the back for hanging on your wall. Perfect for a music room / entertainment center!

Mid Century Modern Design Shell Bowl by Barton Lidice Benes

This bowl is by contemporary artist Barton Lidice Benes (1942 -). Typical of Benes late 1970’s work, the bowl is composed of hundreds of sea shells in a matrix of his own making. Known as a master of “found” elements in his work, the shells are arranged in a pleasing pattern. The “wings” on the face of the central image are tiny iridescent shells. The iconography comes from tombstones and momento mori images of colonial times. The bowl, which is 5” high, 8 ½” long and 14 ¾” wide is in great condition with the exception of two partially broken shells.

Barton Lidice Benes Sculpture “Letter from Aunt Evelyn”

Barton Lidice Benes (1942 -) is a contemporary artist almost impossible to categorize other than that he is a conceptual artist. Among other things he makes boxes with Plexiglas fronts containing found objects presented in a droll humorous manner. One of his sources was correspondence from his aunt Evelyn, an eccentric retired widow in Florida, who sent him up to several times a week 50 to 60 page letters which he turned into art. This 1970’s box “Letters from aunt Evelyn” has copies of his aunt’s correspondence written in various colored inks on the inside of 20 egg shells. The box is 17” x 17" and 2 1/2" deep.

Pair Frank Gehry EASY EDGES Mid-Century Modern Design Chairs

A pair of Frank Gehry (1929- ) corrugated cardboard side chairs from his “Easy Edges” group of 1969-73, these are from ca. 1972. The remarkably strong and comfortable chairs are pictured in “Frank Gehry Buildings and Projects” p. 64 which was published by Rizzoli in 1995. The chairs are 22” deep, 15” wide and 32-1/2” high.

Pair French Modern Design Fifties Streamline Armchairs

This pair of sleek French modern design chairs dates from the 1950’s. With their trapezoid backs and free form arms the chairs are so “very Fifties”. The chairs are upholstered in blue vinyl on a black tubular iron frame. A wonderful addition to your décor. The chairs are 21” wide, 18” deep and 34” high.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Spring Festival Console TAble

This fabulous and quite rare console table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne is made in the Spring Frestival design. They have combined bronze and pewter and highlighted several figures in bright patina using red and yellow and sprinkling a high dose of creative genius! It is signed on the top - check out the images -. This table is also in excellent condition showing very little signs of wear. Philip and Kelvin were avid students of world cultures and here they are celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival which is the most important festival in China and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. The festival is a homecoming of sorts for all Chinese who can travel to be with their families. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC - 1100 BC), when the Chinese offered sacrifices to the gods and ancestors to ensure a good new year and to say goodbye to the old year. Mid-century Modern Baker Geometric Mat Black Sideboard

This very streamline 1960's sideboard was manufactured by the Baker Furniture Company. The sideboard has been refinished in black mat enamel and the handles are American Art Deco at its best! It has three drawers (one with felt bottom and divisions for flatware) and three doors with shelves behind each door. The sideboard is 34 1/4" high x 64 1/4" wide and 19" deep.

George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905. A sculptor, architect and woodworker he graduated from M.I.T. with a master's in Architecture in 1930. Nakashima wrote a book describing his experiences and relationship with wood, The Soul of a Tree (1981). In 1983, he designed the impressive “Altar of Peace” installed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He designed the ORIGINS line for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan and supervised the production of the line. Each piece was marked with his name and dated.

The night stand or side table is in east Indian laurel veneers and has solid walnut legs. It is in his Oil Walnut finish. It is stenciled on the bottom of the drawer "Oil Walnut" "5/60" (the date manufactured) and "215" (the company model number) and branded "George Nakashima". A cloth label "Widdicomb Grand Rapids" is inside the drawer. It is 22 ½" wide , 21" deep and 21" high. The drawer pull is brass. In excellent original condition.

Johannes Andersen Danish Modern Cocktail Bar

Johannes Andersen (1905-1991) designed this teak wood standing dry bar for Skaaning and Son in 1961. The front of the bar features inlaid circles of rosewood and a chrome foot rail. The bartender side of the bar has a fold out top, which folds out for a black composition serving area. The back folds down with a black preparation area and a nine glass holder and a mirrored back. A sliding shelf door covers spaces for storing supplies and the bottom rotates down to store nine bottles. The bar, so useful when open, close up to a compact 45" wide, 43 1/2" high and 15" deep when not in use.

Mid-Century Modern Desk by Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb

T.H. (Terence Harold) Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905 – 1976) was born in London, England and emigrated to America in 1936, working as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company from 1943 to 1956. It was for Widdicomb that he designed this desk, Model 317, in the early 1940’s. The desk features solid oak secondary woods and dovetail joints on the drawer fronts. The figured walnut body has been restored to original showroom condition and the brass pulls have been hand polished and coated with clear lacquer to prevent oxidation. The middle drawer has a label that reads “Modern Original, Widdicomb”. It is 29 ¾” high, 48” wide and 26” deep. The knee hole is 24 ¼” high. The desk can be freestanding as the back is also finished in figured walnut.

Vintage Hekman Mid Century Modern Desk With Cylinder Roll

A unique vintage mid century modern roll top desk by the Hekman Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hekman Furniture was funded in 1922 and become part of the Howard Miller Company in 1983. The company is still in business but this desk from 1960's is not in their line. The desk, with two drawers, has a body of figured walnut with stained oak hex-shaped legs. Inside the drawers the secondary wood is oak. The desk has a cylinder roll which opens to reveal storage compartments. The pulls on the cylinder and the leg stretchers are aluminum. The writing surface is of a tough composition made to resemble leather, it is 14 1/2” by 51 1/2”. Over all the desk is 54” wide, 28 ½” deep and 34” high at the back, the writing surface is 28 ¼” high. The desk is in excellent restored condition.

Rare Donald Roller Wilson Lithographic Print Titled MEET 1977

This hand signed lithograph was produced by Donald Roller Wilson (1930 - ) in 1977 in an edition of only thirty. The deckle edged print is floated in an ash frame and is signed, titled, dated and numbered on the lower left skyline in pencil “7/30” “Meet” and “Donald Roller Wilson” “77”. The image shows a haloed monkey and a heavenly hand offering the monkey a steak on a string above his head and another string with an olive . The print is 18” high x 24” wide, overall it is 21 ½” x 26 ½”.

George Ciancimino Mid-Century Modern Studio Ashtray

This unusual ashtray was made in 1963 in the studio of George Ciancimino (1928-). Hand crafted and useful for cigar, cigarette or pipe smokers, and the base of the ashtray is made of Aluminum. The balls are half round and individually set on a series of cross bars. The ashtray was used in the James Bond film "Diamonds are Forever". A simple object like an ashtray is made into a 20th century sculptural masterpiece. The ashtray is 7” in diameter and 1 3/4” high.

George Ciancimino Post Modern Studio Coffee Table

This British postmodern coffee table was studio made by George Ciancimino (1928-) in 1972 for an American client residing in England. The table has a solid rosewood top with four stainless steel legs set into and under the top. At least one other table in this form was made, it was in Formica. Ciancimino’s studio work is hard to find and extremely well made. The table is 60” long, 36” wide and 15” high.

George Ciancimino Mid-Century Modern Studio Floor Lamp

This striking mid-century modern stainless steel floor lamp was made in 1963 in his studio by British designer George Ciancimino (1928-). It is one of an edition of three made. The lamp has a swiveling head which can act as a torchiere for ambient light or can be positioned downward as a reading light. The side pole is topped with a knob that turns the light off and acts as a rheostat to dim or brighten the light. The lamp is beautifully handmade and stands alone as a piece of modern sculpture. The lamp is 55 ¾” high (as a torchiere), 48” high as a reading lamp. The base is 14” x 14 1/8”.

Mid Century Modern Eero Saarinen Oval Pedestal Table For Knoll

This table was designed in 1956 by Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) for Knoll Furniture Company. It was part of the "tulip" or pedestal group which knoll advertised as "The Saarinen Collection". He said the collection "As to the pedestal furniture, the undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." The Table has a base of molded, cast aluminum finished white. The table is 28 1/2" high, 36" wide, and 54" long.

Extremely Large American Art Deco Sofa

We do not know how old this sofa is but we purchased it from a Miami Beach Mansion with deco and older furnishings. The sofa comes in three sections for easy in transport and entry to home. It is 210” wide (17 ½ feet), 44 high and 36 ¼” deep. The sofa needs to be reupholstered in any material you choose for $7.500, ready to be delivered to your home.

Marianna Von Allesch American Mid Century Modern Design Ceramic Table Lamp

This interesting American mid Century modern design lamp was designed by Marianna Von Allesch who was born in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. She studied at the Royal academy in Berlin and with Bruno Paul before moving to America in 1928. She designed furniture and glass but is best known for her work in ceramics and especially lamps. In 1956, working with architect Morris Lapidus she supplied lamps for the lobby and rooms of the Americana hotel in Bal Harbor. This lamp with its odd angular shape features an exotic lady incised on the terracotta base. The lady and her dress are glazed in amber, brown, blue, gray and black. The remainder of the vase is covered in a thick dark pewter glaze, from which the lady appears to emerge. The ceramic portion of the lamp is 12 ¼" high. The lamp is signed on the lower rear.

Paul Frankl was the first American designer to produce a totally original American furniture design with his "Skyscraper" bookcases, the success of which led him to name his company "Skyscraper Furniture". Between his early (mid 1920's) success with "Skyscraper" style furniture and his later Chinese Modern and "Speed" furniture of the 1930's, Frankl wrote books and magazine articles on the Modern Style and was its most vocal proponent. Click to Read More (1886 – 1958) designed this American mid century modern design dining table and six chairs for the Johnson Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1949. The table, with its rectangular cork top and cross-slatted mahogany legs has been refinished and is in pristine condition. The table is 41 ¾” wide x 72” long (96” long when the two 12” wide leaves are added) and it is 29” high. The six chairs (two armchairs and four side chairs) have been refinished and reupholstered in a soft sage green fabric. They are variously known as “V back” or “Plunging Neckline” chairs. The armchairs are 32” high, 25” wide and 21” deep. The side chairs are 31 ½” high, 20 wide and 19” deep.

Jacques Adnet French Mid Century Design Floor Lamp

Jacques Adnet (1900 - 1984) designed this beautiful and useful floor lamp shortly after World War II. The adjustable brass shaft sits on three brass feet and is wrapped in saddle stitched blood red leather. The height of the lamp is adjustable from 60” to 79”. A new custom made “No Shadows” silk shade has been installed. The fixture takes three bulbs: a 100 to 300 watt in the center and two round 60-watt bulbs on either side. The lamp has been rewired for American electricity and is in excellent condition.

Curtis Jere Mid-Century Modern Design Chrome Steel Wall Mirror

This striking mid-century modern design wall mirror was designed and made by the company Artisan House founded in 1963 by brothers-in-law Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels under the name Curtis Jere (a combination of their first names). The mirror was produced from 1977 till 1979. The mirror frame is chromed steel. It is 46” tall and 24” wide and is in great vintage condition.

Robsjohn-Gibbings Magazine Table

An American art deco magazine table designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905 – 1976) for the Widdicomb Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, circa 1950. The magazine table is constructed of bleached walnut and features an “x” design which allows for magazines and newspapers to be kept on each side with a flat surface on the top. The table is 23 ¼” wide x 29” long and is 22 ¾” high.

Six American Art Deco Chairs by T.H. Robsjohn - Gibbings

This set of six quality American art deco arm chairs was designed by Terence Harold Robsjohn – Gibbings (1905 -1976) for the Grand Rapids firm Widdicomb Furniture where he worked as a designer from the 1943 to 1956. The chairs are constructed of solid blond mahogany which has acquired a warm patina. They are upholstered in a patterned ultrasuede. Each chair is 32” high, 25” wide and 22” deep. The seat hight is 18” and the arms are 25" high.

Edward Wormley for Dunbar Pentagon Coffee Table in Carpathian Elm Burl

This American art deco coffee table was designed by Edward Wormley (1907 - 1995) for the Dunbar Furniture Company, Berne, Indiana ca. 1955. The pentagon shaped table has mahogany dark stained legs and and inset burlwood top. The table is 48" in diameter and is 17" high.

Pair of Greta Von Nessen Mid-Century Modern Design Lamps

This pair of rare and stately table lamps was designed by Greta Von Nessen (1900 – 1974) who was the widow of Walter Von Nessen, the noted designer of lighting from the 1920’s until his death in 1944. While not as famous as her “Anywhere” lamp, recently featured on a U.S. Postage Stamp, the lamps are her own design. (There is evidence that the “Anywhere” lamp was designed by a German lady, Lilly Reich (1885 – 1947) and shown in a 1930 – 1931 Berlin Exhibition). The lamps are in excellent condition with eggshell enameled shades, a circular weighted brass base and a brass shaft / arm. The shaft swivels on the base and the shades swing up and down for excellent reading, utility. Each lamp is 20” tall.

GEORGE NAKASHIMA Mid-Century Modern Design ORIGINS LINE Long Sofa in Two Sections

This Mid-Century Modern design long spindle side sofa was designed ca. 1950 by George Nakashima (1905-1990) for his Origins line, produced by the Widdicomb Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. The sofa, number 252 W in solid walnut, is in excellent condition and has been recently recovered. The sofa is in two sections for portability and for possible use with a table for around a corner. It is 125" wide, 34" deep and 25" high at the back.

It has the remains of a Widdicomb paper sticker, "241", "5/60" and "oil wal" (the finish oil walnut ) stenciled on the underside of the top. "George Nakashima" is also branded on the underside. The 30" x 20" table is 21" high.

George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905. A sculptor, architect and woodworker he graduated from M.I.T. with a master's in Architecture in 1930. Nakashima wrote a book describing his experiences and relationship with wood, The Soul of a Tree (1981). In 1983, he designed the impressive “Altar of Peace” installed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He designed the ORIGINS line for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan and supervised the production of the line. Each piece was marked with his name and dated.

Mid Century Modern Design Soviet Propaganda Rose Colored Glasses Poster

This striking 1989 Soviet Propaganda poster with its startling graphic design in black, white and magenta, warns citizens not to look at things through rose colored glasses. While it may appear that “All is Well”, the poster lists society ills to be watched for: Crime, violence, indifference, ignorance, boorishness, acquisitiveness, speculation, rackets and Mafia. The bottom reads “Fans of this Color will be Forced to Answer”. The poster is displayed in a black wood frame, glazed with UV Plexiglas and measuring 38” x 25 ½”.

Max Bill Limited Edition Geometric Silkscreen Print

This limited edition silkscreen print is by Max Bill (1908 – 1994), the famous Swiss abstract artist whose paintings sell in the $ 50,000 - $ 70,000 range. The print is a geometric pattern in blue, yellow, red and black on white paper and accented with a blue and ochre double mat inside a silver metal frame. Measuring 21” x 21”, it is signed and dated “6/87” in pencil on the lower right and annotated on the lower left “VI” and “28/100”.

Mid Century Modern Design Italian Fifties Floor Lamp

The ultimate 1950’s Italian floor lamp! This well constructed solid brass lamp features four heads, each with two lights. The red shades face up and the white ones face down. The lamp has two switches. One controls the up lights, the other the down lights. The brass has been polished and covered with clear lacquer, the shades and base re-enameled and it has been rewired for American electricity. The lamp sands 70 ¾” high and sits on an 11” weighted base. The shades each measure 6 ½ tall and 5 ½ at each opening.

Mid Century Design French Hat and Coat Rack with Colored Balls

This mid century design French hat and coat rack is from the 1950’s. The black painted steel frame twists and turns to accommodate five colored wood balls, which hold coats. A shelf above receives the hats. It is 20" tall, 26" wide and 10" deep. It is in excellent condition.

Pair of Mid Century Modern Design Life-Size Sheep After Francois-Xavier Lalanne

This pair of fluffy sheep were made in the 1970’s after models made by Francois-Xavier Lalanne (1927 -2008). Constructed of ebonized wood and real sheep's wool, the animals' function is surrealistic furniture as they can be used as seating. The sheep have several advantages over living sheep, you don’t have to feed them and there is no mess to clean up. They are 34” tall and 36” long.

Set of Three Mid Century Modern Design Nesting Tables by Maison Jansen

This set of three nesting tables is by the French decoration firm Maison Jansen and are from the mid 1950’s. The finely detailed frames are of solid brass and hold the original clear glass tops with mirrored borders. The tallest table is 18” high, 19” wide and 14” deep. The brass is in great condition and the glass has no chips or cracks.

William Doezema for MASTERCRAFT Mid-Century Modern Design Very Large Table

This 1960’s Mid-Century Modern Design brass and beveled glass table which could be used as a dining table, desk or as a conference table in a board room. Designed by William Doezema (1917 - 2009) for Mastercraft, Grand Rapids, the Company he founded in 1946 with his brother Charles and sold in 1974 to Baker Furniture. The table comes with a center leaf and soft pads for use with a table cloth. The table is 29" high, 43" wide and 74" long (104" with the leaf inserted) and is in excellent condition.

George Nakashima Mid-Century Modern Design Desk

George Nakashima (1905 – 1990) designed this rectangular desk for the Widdicomb Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1958. The desk, with two drawers, is constructed of select walnut and walnut veneers. The desk is 60” wide x 26” deep and 29” high.

French Fifties Modern Design Floor Lamp

This French floor lamp is from the 1950’s and exhibits the spirit and spunk of that period. In brass and wine colored enamel, the lamp sits on a tripod base of three arrows with a 17” diameter shade over three cups with ball light bulbs. The lamp has been rewired for American electricity and is 70” tall.
